Episode 604 - JUNE 17: ÞJÓÐHÁTÍÐARDAGURINN - ICELAND'S NATIONAL DAY

Iceland broke away from Denmark in 1944 and ever since the nation has celebrated on the 17th of June; the birthday of the man who made that push for independence, Jón Sigurðsson.

Jón Sigurðsson (1811-1879), is the nineteenth-century politician who defined the case for Iceland’s statehood. He was born at Hrafnseyri, in Arnarfjörður in the Westfjords.

Darren went to his birthplace at Hrafnseyri, where there is a museum and exhibition (https://www.hrafnseyri.is/english/) dedicated to telling his story, and spoke to Margrét Hrönn Hallmundsdóttir.
