Today on RÚV English, the first in a new series looking at things which were illegal or impossible in Iceland, until just a few decades ago.
Until 1989, beer was illegal in Iceland, or at least anything stronger than just over two percent proof.
These weak ales were sometimes mixed with vodka, which, like other spirits and wine, was legal.
The result was to badly - and somewhat disgustingly - approximate full strength beer, until the ban was finally lifted.
Darren went to the National Museum of Iceland to speak to Helga Vollertsen, Curator of Ethnology, to find out more.
