Today, RÚV English Radio is in Vestmannaeyjar.
The Eldheimar exhibition (https://www.eldheimar.is/?lang=en) recalls in a graphic and novel way when over 5000 inhabitants of Vestmannaeyjar fled their homes, on the night of January 23, 1973.
The eruption that began that night on Heimaey, the only inhabited island in the Westman Islands, lasted for over 5 months. Lava and ash destroyed a third of the homes.
Kristín Jóhannsdóttir is the director of Edlheimar, and remembers the night of the eruption, and her evcuation, very clearly. She spoke to Darren at the museum.
